Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress

Congressman Mike Thompson is currently launching county specific Veterans History Project Steering Committees in Yolo, Lake, Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Humboldt and Del Norte counties.  Put simply – Congressman Thompson needs your help.

The Veterans History Project committee’s purpose is to assist in coordinating students from local schools as well as from the Scouts and other youth groups to interview veterans. Recordings of the written, oral or video interviews will be submitted to the Library of Congress in Washington, DC to make personal accounts of war veterans accessible to all future generations.  Congressman Thompson’s Veterans History Project steering committees are contacting teachers and youth organization leaders as well as veterans who would like to participate in each of the counties throughout his district. These steering committees are also looking for veterans who would like to be mentors and work with a student and veteran throughout the project. Interested students, teachers, veterans, and anyone who would like to serve on one of these county committees should contact Tim Daly at timothy.daly@mail.house.gov

About the Veterans History Project

It’s important that veterans’ experiences are passed on to future generations.  We must learn from the heroes and heroines of our past, and make sure their stories aren’t lost.  Our nation loses approximately 1,000 World War II veterans daily, along with a growing number of veterans from the Korean War and Vietnam War.  I’ve contributed my own story to the Veterans History Project, and I strongly encourage others to participate in this important program as well,  The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center was created by the U.S. Congress in 2000 to collect, preserve, and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.  To date, VHP comprises over 68,000 individual collections, which include audio- and video-recorded interviews, original photographs, letters, and other historical documents from veterans of every war and conflict since World War I.
