Artist Claudia Flood has her studio in Potter Valley. She has recently displayed in one-woman shows at the Atrium Gallery, the Lurie Company, San Francisco and the Mendocino County Museum in Willits. Last year she was commissioned by Allied Domecq to do a series of paintings on wine bottles as represented by Clos du Bois, Atlas Peak, and William Hill Wineries. These bottles were auctioned at The Winesong charity auction this past summer and the proceeds go to the North Coast Hospital Fund.
Flood received her masters in fine arts degree from the University of Washington and also attended Burnley School of Commercial Art in Seattle. Her work has shown extensively from San Francisco to Louisville, Kentucky, and her paintings have become prized among private art collectors around the country. Each year, Congressman Thompson participates in “Artistic Discovery, an annual high school art competition held by the U.S. House of Representatives to showcase young artists from each congressional district. Ms. Flood has participated as a judge in “Artistic Discovery.”
The late Thomas Albright of the San Francisco Chronicle described her work as "dramatic, bold and colorful". Her pictures have been said to evoke an offbeat style often described in the art world as "whimsical realism.” The oil on canvas painting chosen by Congressman Thompson (photographed) is one in a series of portraits of notable local farmers and ranchers entitled “Mendocino County History Makers.” This particular piece features longtime Potter Valley resident David Hopper.
