Local earthquake-damaged highways and roads will benefit from $4.8 million in federal emergency repair money.

Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena on Friday announced the money will come from the Federal Highway Administration. The South Napa Earthquake on Aug. 24 caused road damage varying from pavement cracks to exposing rebar on concrete bridges.

"Our community is still recovering from the earthquake that struck nearly six months ago," Thompson said in a press release. "Our infrastructure is still in need of repair, and these funds will go a long way towards helping our recovery effort."

State Department of Transportation spokesman Vince Jacala welcomed the news.

"It allows us to go and do these repairs that are very much needed," Jacala said on Friday.

Jacala couldn't say how Caltrans will spend the money. The agency will provide the information within a few days, he said.

Previously, Caltrans announced it would make $5.3 million in earthquake repairs at 11 locations in Napa and Solano counties. For example, workers in October repaired abutments on the Maxwell Bridge that takes Imola Avenue over the Napa River.
