Chairman Thompson's Bill to Extend Disaster Tax Relief, Other Tax Provisions Clears Committee

June 20, 2019

Package reported favorably by Ways and Means

Washington – Today Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that his bill, the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019, has been favorably reported out of the full Committee on Ways and Means and is ready for consideration by the whole House. A statement from Chairman Thompson is below. This is the first time in more than a decade that the Committee has extended these provisions prospectively.

"This is good news for the American taxpayer and good news for disaster survivors. By approving my bill, we are taking a big step forward in providing longer-term certainty in our tax code. This bill includes extensions of the provisions like the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which helps disadvantaged groups find permanent employment. Importantly, this legislation provides much-deserved certainty for those who have survived natural disasters, such as wildfires or hurricanes. Those survivors will not have to come to Congress to get tax relief after suffering what is for some, the worst experience of their lives.

"This package is also an important down payment on our Democratic tax priorities, including a strong commitment to promoting green energy and offering further renewable energy incentives. My legislation extends 10 green energy and efficiency provisions and it is just the start in prioritizing these important renewable sources. I will continue working to ensure a vote on my bill on the House floor and to provide further certainty for taxpayers."
