Rep. Thompson Statement on Government Shutdown

January 20, 2018

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-05) released the following statement:

"Today, on the anniversary of President Trump's inauguration, the government has run out of funding and been shut down. Republicans control the White House and both Houses of Congress, and they've proven today that they cannot perform even the most basic function of government: keeping it running.

This is unacceptable.

Without a long-term budget at the beginning of the fiscal year in October, Republicans have since passed 3 month-long continuing resolutions to keep the government open, promising they would use that time to negotiate a long-term spending deal.

They did not do that.

Our government has now screeched to a halt. Federal employees have been furloughed, important government business has been stopped, and countless government services that Americans rely on are no longer available.

Republicans must take action immediately to pass a clean continuing resolution to reopen the government and then work in a bipartisan fashion to pass a responsible, long-term budget."
