Thompson Concerned by SCOTUS Nominee

January 31, 2017

Washington – Today, the President announced his nomination of Neil Gorsuch to the Supreme Court. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) released the following statement:

"As our country faces significant challenges from gun violence to access to healthcare, we must have a Supreme Court that reflects the values and ethics of the American people. I am deeply concerned that Judge Gorsuch is out of step with our country.

"His opinions have empowered employers like Hobby Lobby to deny workers access to reproductive healthcare. He has also weakened laws aimed at reducing gun violence—even in the wake of mass shootings. This is not a pick meant to bring the country together or soothe fears that our basic rights are being eroded. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to oppose this nomination and insist the President put forward a candidate that truly reflects our morals as a nation."

Gorsuch is considered a staunch conservative who is even further right than the late Justice Scalia on a number of topics, including the legal precedent that requires courts to defer to reasonable agency interpretations of ambiguous wording in broad statutes.
