Thompson on Shooting at Republican Baseball Practice

June 14, 2017

Washington – Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) released the following statement after a gunman opened fire on Republican Members of Congress, their staff, and Capitol Police who were practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game:

"My heart goes out to Majority Whip Steve Scalise and the others wounded in this morning's cowardly attack. It is especially shocking that it took place at an event meant to bring Members together in friendship and fellowship. Though we are all disturbed by today's shooting, it will not divide us. Today we are all Americans, and we all stand together in wishing everyone affected a quick recovery.

"I also want to thank the Capitol Police, whose actions this morning saved countless lives and prevented further carnage. You are heroes, and no words can capture the full extent of our gratitude."

In May, Thompson proposed forming a bipartisan, Select Committee to study the causes and impacts of gun violence. As Chairman of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Thompson will be speaking with his colleagues on both sides of the aisle about moving forward together in the hopes of preventing another such attack.
