Thompson Rebukes President for Remarks on Nukes

February 24, 2017

Washington – Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) released the following statement on the President's remarks about our nuclear arsenal:

"Nuclear non-proliferation is not a ‘bad deal,' and the United States is already at the top of the pack when it comes to our arsenal. Expanding our nuclear capabilities—or even simply suggesting it—could kick start a new arms race and make us all considerably less safe. Once again, the President has demonstrated a troubling lack of understanding when it comes to our military capabilities and decades of foreign policy. As a former member of the Intelligence Committee, I know for a fact that we already have the strongest nuclear forces in the world, not to mention conventional forces. The President needs to realize that his remarks are no longer meant to gin up support on the campaign trail. They have real—and potentially disastrous—consequences for the entire country."
