Santa Rosa Community Health Centers, the county's largest system of federally qualified community clinics, is slated to receive more than $3.7 million in federal funds aimed at providing medical care for the uninsured.

A grant, which comes from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will be used for staff who provide essential primary health services; medical care and programs for the uninsured; and outreach and enrollment efforts.

The grant was announced Tuesday morning by Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena. In a press statement, Thompson called SRCHC's work "second to none."

"They help make sure that no one in our community goes without the health care they need just because they don't have the means to pay," he said. "I am proud to support these grants which allow them to continue their important service."

Naomi Fuchs, SRCHC's CEO, said the money will ensure that health care services can continue to be provided to some 45,000 local residents who struggle with poverty, lack of insurance, cultural barriers and homelessness.

"Without this ongoing support from the federal government, we simply could not continue to address the prevalent health disparities in our community," she said.
