Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, on Friday announced $4.8 million in federal aid for Caltrans to cover costs to repair infrastructure damaged by the Aug. 24 earthquake centered near Napa.

The funds are from the Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration, and come after President Barack Obama approved FEMA disaster aid for local governments in September.

Eligible work includes emergency repairs needed to restore traffic and protect facilities as well as permanent repairs necessary to restore state roads and related structures to pre-disaster condition.

"Our infrastructure is still in need of repair and these funds will go a long way towards helping our recovery efforts," Thompson said in a statement. "Going forward, I will continue working with all federal agencies to make sure our district gets the resources we need to address the damage that the earthquake caused."

The magnitude-6.0 earthquake that struck Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties was the largest to hit the Bay Area in 25 years. Estimates show that the earthquake caused $362 million in damage and damaged more than 1,500 homes.
