REP. MIKE THOMPSON STATEMENT ON PRESIDENT OBAMA’S ISIL ADDRESS

September 10, 2014

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5), a senior member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) released the following statement on President Obama's address on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL):

"Tonight, President Obama laid out a comprehensive, multi-layered strategy to combat the ISIL terrorist group and diminish its capacity to operate.

"The ISIL terrorist group brutally murdered two American citizens. It poses a threat to the United States, our allies, and to regional stability. We cannot wait until it grows stronger and more capable of resisting international efforts to stop it.

"With the cooperation and involvement of Congress and a broad, international coalition of Muslim and Western countries, the U.S. should move to diminish ISIL, degrade their organizational capabilities, and bring those responsible for killing Americans and other innocent individuals to justice."

Congressman Mike Thompson is proud to represent California's 5th Congressional District, which includes all or part of Contra Costa, Lake, Napa, Solano and Sonoma Counties. He is a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Rep. Thompson is also a member of the fiscally conservative Blue Dog Coalition and chairs the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Wine Caucus.
