Thompson Announces House Vote on Portable Fuel Container Safety Act

Bipartisan bill to be considered by full House next week

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that his bipartisan bill, the Portable Fuel Container Safety Act, will be considered for a vote by the full House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 17. This bill directs the Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish a standard requiring Flame Mitigation Devices to be used to prevent fire accidents. A statement from Thompson is below.

"Excited to announce that my bipartisan legislation to keep families and communities safer from fire accidents will be up for a vote by the full House of Representatives on Tuesday, September 17. This bill was drafted after my constituent, Margrett Lewis, told me her family's story highlighting the dangers of fuel containers and I am honored we will take an important step to preventing these tragic fires next week."

H.R. 806, the, will be debated and up for a vote on Tuesday, September 17, the proceedings of which can be viewed live here. Flame arrestors can help prevent these types of accidents, but currently there is no requirement for them to be used for the consumer containers found in most homes and for everyday use. Thompson's bill would establish safety standards to help prevent these tragic accidents. The legislation is endorsed by the American Burn Association, the Congressional Fire Services Institute, the Consumer Federation of America, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the International Association of Fire Fighters, the National Association of State Fire Marshalls, the National Volunteer Fire Council, the National Fire Protection Association, and the Phoenix Society of Burn Survivors.
