The nation’s emergency management chief visited Lake County Wednesday to tour areas devastated by the 12-day-old Valley Fire and vowed to help the roughly 3,000 people left homeless by the blaze obtain temporary housing and assistance as they rebuild.

But Federal Emergency Management Agency Administrator Craig Fugate said residents must begin the process by registering their losses with the agency as soon as possible, either online or by phone.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5) today announced that President Obama issued a major disaster declaration for the State of California triggering the release of federal funds to help people recover from the Valley Fire that occurred September 12, 2015, and is continuing. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Individual Assistance (IA) funds will be available to help individuals rebuild, repair and replace housing and other personal property not covered by insurance.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5) today announced a $200,000 grant from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for Sonoma County's Social Advocates for Youth (SAY).

"SAY provides kids in Sonoma County with homes, stability and hope for a good future," said Thompson. "Their work reduces youth homelessness and makes our entire community a stronger, better place. I am proud to support these grants to help SAY continue and expand their work throughout out county."

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. – A day after Gov. Jerry Brown sought a presidential major disaster declaration to aid the Valley fire recovery effort, President Barack Obama granted the request, an action that makes federal assistance available to those hit hardest by the incident.

The president's Tuesday declaration immediately opens up the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Individuals and Households Program to help eligible Lake County residents begin the recovery process, the agency reported.

Earlier today, the State of California submitted its request to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for IA.
