Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, has named Press Democrat columnist and local historian Gaye LeBaron Sonoma County's Woman of the Year as part of Women's History Month.
LeBaron was one of five women Thompson honored — one for each of the five counties in his district — at a small celebration Saturday at Honig Vineyard and Winery in Rutherford, LeBaron said.
RUTHERFORD — When Cynthia Guzman was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease three years ago, the retired nurse was determined not to let the disease knock her down.
As long as she could, she would be out there, raising awareness about the disease and the need to support research to put an end to Alzheimer's.

Vallejo's volunteer of the year, Karen Taylor, is being honored with yet another award for her community work: Congressman Mike Thompson has selected Taylor as Solano County's Woman of the Year.
Taylor and four other women from Thompson's congressional district were brought together in a ceremony Saturday afternoon in Rutherford, celebrating their individual work within their county.
"I'm overwhelmed, overexcited right now," Taylor said of being recognized for her community work. "I'm still pinching myself to see if this is true."
