WASHINGTON, DC – A bipartisan amendment authored by U.S. Reps. Mike Thompson (D-CA), chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, Pete King (R-NY), Elizabeth Esty (D-CT), Joe Heck (R-NV), Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Mike Quigley (D-IL) to strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Checks System (NICS) passed the U.S. House of Representatives today by a vote of 260-145-1.
WASHINGTON -- The House of Representatives on Thursday approved a measure that would boost funding for the nation's background checks system, less than one week after another mass shooting shined the spotlight on congressional inaction on gun control.
The House on Thursday approved a bipartisan measure that would provide more money for background checks on gun buyers nearly a week after a mass murder in California left seven people dead, including the killer.
The Republican-led chamber added $19.5 million to expand the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which is a federal database that states access when processing gun sales.
WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5), chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, today offered a bipartisan amendment with U.S. Reps. Pete King (R-NY), Elizabeth Esty (D-CT), Joe Heck (R-NV), Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Mike Quigley (D-IL) to strengthen the National Instant Criminal Background Checks System (NICS). The amendment provides an additional $19.5 million to help states improve their submissions into the criminal background checks system, brining NICS funding for Fiscal Year 2015 to $78 million. The amendment will be voted on tomorrow.

Mare Island Dry Docks has been awarded another contract, this time worth $1.9 million, for a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ship's repair, U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-Napa, announced.
The Ronald H. Brown, a NOAA research vessel, will be dry docked and repaired by the Vallejo company.
Thompson, Benicia's and Vallejo's representative in the House, said Wednesday the contract will create 45 to 50 jobs at Mare Island.
