U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5), chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, today led more than 100 of his colleagues in sending a letter to House Speaker John Boehner and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi urging that Fiscal Year 2014 appropriations bills not include legislative language, or “riders”, that would block efforts to reduce and prevent gun violence.

Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Pete King (R-NY) today released the following statement on the growing momentum in support of the H.R. 1565, the King-Thompson bipartisan compromise to expand the current background check system to all commercial sales. The bill currently has more than 150 co-sponsors. Joining them are original co-authors Mike Fitzpatrick (R-PA), Pat Meehan (R-PA), Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Peter Defazio (D-OR).

Interest rates on some popular federal student loans are set to double in two months, a prospect that has alarmed students, parents and activists concerned about soaring student debt.

“It's ridiculous,” said Patrick Maloney, a Sonoma State University junior who is involved in California State Student Association lobbying efforts to prevent the rate increase.

“It's disappointing and yet another instance where higher education is not being fully supported,” said Maloney, a senator on SSU's student government body, Associated Students.

U.S. Representatives Mike Thompson (D-CA), Ted Poe (R-TX), Peter Welch (D-VT) and Chris Gibson (R-NY) today introduced bipartisan legislation in support of an "all of the above" energy approach. The Master Limited Partnerships Parity Act will modify the federal tax code to make it easier and more attractive for private capital to invest in renewable energy.

The legislation will ensure that interest rates on subsidized Stafford student loans for undergraduate students do not dramatically increase on July 1 of this year.

Without congressional action, rates are set to double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

U.S. Reps. Mike Thompson (CA-05) and Chris Gibson (NY-19) announced today that they have joined together to introduce H.R. 1465, The Storage Technology for Renewable and Green Energy 2012 Act (STORAGE) in the United States House of Representatives. The STORAGE Act would provide a tax credit to individuals and businesses when they invest in energy storage systems. Energy storage systems allow businesses and consumers to store excess generated energy then use that energy during periods of peak demand.
