The conventional wisdom in Washington, D.C., is that barely 100 days after the horror in Newtown, Conn., the momentum for gun control legislation has waned.

President Barack Obama gave an impassioned rebuttal to that defeatist notion Thursday. "The entire country pledged we would do something about it and that this time it would be different," he said, surrounded by parents of shooting victims.

"Shame on us if we've forgotten," he added. "I haven't forgotten those kids. Shame on us if we've forgotten."

Hundreds of people gathered for the 22nd annual dinner - which included local wines and a silent auction - held in the Phil Lewis Hall at the Lake County Fairgrounds.

U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, pressed a U.S. Department of Interior official on Tuesday with questions about how vigorously the federal government would defend itself from a local Indian tribe's lawsuit.

The Mishewal Wappo Tribe of Alexander Valley has a summary judgment hearing in its lawsuit against the Department of Interior looming in July, and Thompson pushed Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Kevin Washburn on the government's defense of that case in a House subcommittee meeting.

Congressman Aaron Schock (R-IL) and Congressman Mike Thompson (D-CA) both of the Ways & Means Committee joined today to praise the inclusion of the Small Business Accounting and Tax Simplification Act in the House Ways and Means small business tax reform discussion draft. The Schock-Thompson legislation, H.R. 947, would allow small businesses with up to $10 million in gross receipts to be eligible for a more simplified accounting and tax filing method with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
