Each year, more than 3 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States. And given the rise in competition and competitiveness in sports at all levels, concussions and head injuries are happening with greater frequency.

Yet, it's a health issue that the public â€" and parents in particular â€" is only beginning to get its head around. In many cases, players, parents and coaches downplay the significance of head injuries in hopes that “toughing it out” will be in the best interests of the player and their team and that there will be no long-term impacts.

A broad coalition of groups back the House's Gun Violence Prevention Task Force's Policy Principles. The task force, chaired by Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) released a comprehensive set of policy principles that both respect the Second Amendment and will reduce gun violence last week. President Obama finished his State of the Union speech with a rousing call for action against gun violence. He invoked the name of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, shot to death just a week after performing at the inauguration. The president brought up the wounding of ex-Rep. Gabby Giffords and the families of mass slaughters in Connecticut, Colorado, Wisconsin, Arizona and Virginia.

"They deserve a vote," he implored.
