Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), who was recently named as chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force by Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.), announced the rest of the leadership team late Friday afternoon.
Thompson named 12 representatives of the House Democratic Caucus, who will join him as vice chairs. The task force will undertake ways of reducing and preventing gun violence, following the tragedy in Newtown, Conn.
The task force is expected to release a comprehensive set of policy proposals in early February.

Rep. Mike Thompson, the House Democrats' point man on gun reform, has picked a dozen vice chairs - including another Bay Area member of Congress - for his task force and is planning a community forum next week in the North Bay.
Thompson, D-Napa, was named last month by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to head a task force on gun violence prevention. He's a Vietnam combat veteran, gun owner and avid hunter.

In our endorsement of Rep. Mike Thompson for an eighth term in the U.S. Congress, we wrote at length about the significant influence his leadership has had on Napa County.
That leadership found greater national purpose last week.
Prompted by the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre on Dec. 14 in Newtown, Conn., Thompson has been selected to chair a new congressional task force on gun control. The panel will be focused specifically on reducing and preventing gun violence throughout the nation.

Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-1) was sworn in on Thursday as the representative in the U.S. House of Representatives for California's Fifth Congressional District.
The Fifth District, recently redrawn, includes the southern portion of Lake County as well as all or parts of Contra Costa, Napa, Solano and Sonoma counties.

North Bay Congressman Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, said he voted in favor of the bipartisan agreement to avert the fiscal cliff because to do otherwise would have triggered another recession.
The legislation was passed in the 11th hour, according to the Huffington Post.
Thompson, a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, released the following statement Tuesday on his vote:
“This legislation is far from perfect but it's better than falling off the fiscal cliff. Doing nothing would have sent our economy into a tailspin and triggered another recession.
