Environmental Protection Agency officials switched on a new underground heating system Wednesday to expedite the toxic cleanup at the Frontier Fertilizer Superfund site in Davis.

Electric probes inserted into the soil of the 5-acre cleanup area at 3901 Second St. will vaporize contaminated water and the gas will be treated on-site. Cleanup at the 5-acre area will be complete in two years, said EPA Project Manager Bonnie Arthur, who led a media tour of the site Wednesday afternoon.

On Saturday, Congressman Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena), a senior member of the House Committee on Ways & Means, voted against House passage of H.R. 1, the continuing resolution that would fund the federal government through the end of fiscal year 2011.

While the continuing resolution does include some meaningful cuts to wasteful spending, it also includes irresponsible cuts that would hurt working families in Northern California and across our country.

Built to assist with search and rescue missions, the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Barracuda took its passengers on a different kind of cruise Saturday, providing Maritime Administrator David Matsuda a glimpse of what Humboldt Bay could be.

Matsuda, along with a team of officials from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration, toured the bay for the first time since the government awarded the area a $275,000 grant. The money will allow for an analysis of the area's economic strengths, with the hope that a marine highway service will be created to better the county.

Congressman Mike Thompson (CA-1) today announced that veteran Times-Standard natural resources reporter and columnist John Driscoll is joining his Eureka-based staff as a district representative for Humboldt and Del Norte counties. Driscoll will join the staff in March to take over for longtime District Representative Liz Murguia, who is retiring at the end of March.

“I'm thrilled to welcome John to my staff,” said Rep. Thompson. “As a member of the North Coast community, he knows what's important to the families in this district.

Thompson had planned to attend the Eureka event in person, but was unable to do so due to ongoing votes in Washington, D.C. Last year, Rep. Thompson introduced legislation to rename the United States Postal Service located at 337 West Clark Street in Eureka, California, as the “Sam Sacco Post Office Building.” The bill was unanimously approved by the U.S.

Congressman Mike Thompson, Eureka Mayor Frank Jager and 1st District Supervisor Jimmy Smith will be on hand at a ceremony today to honor former Eureka Mayor Sam Sacco when the city's main post office will officially bear his name.

Thompson and Rosemarie Fernandez, U.S. Postal Service district manager out of San Francisco, will dedicate the Eureka Main Post Office in the name of Sacco at the ceremony to begin at 2 p.m. at 337 West Clark St. Also attending will be former Eureka City Council member Tom McMurray Jr. and Sam Sacco Jr.

What we're hearing on this amendment and as to the amendment itself is certainly a switch from what we've been hearing over the past couple of days. I say that because this amendment is a Washington, D.C., solution to a very, very local issue.

This amendment would stop a comprehensive local solution to a major and very costly problem in the Klamath River Basin.

North Coast Congressman Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, a senior member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, blasted a Republican proposal outlining budget appropriations for the balance of the current fiscal year.

The proposal, officially dubbed House Resolution 1, the continuing resolution, would strip funding for important state water initiatives, including federal regulations protecting salmon, and would have “catastrophic” economic impacts on Thompson's 1st District, the congressman said in a press release.
