January 11, 2013
Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) hosted a gun violence prevention public forum in Santa Rosa, California, Thursday. A wide-range of issues were discussed by federal and local officials.
Congressman Thompson chairs a 13-member task force that is working to make legislative recommendations on gun control. He is scheduled to hold hearings over the next month on reducing and preventing gun violence. Policy proposals are expected to be released by his group in early February.
According to CBS, Rep. Thompson said "public comment at the community level will help the congressional task force form its policy recommendations." The panel will also consist of Sheriff Steve Freitas, District Attorney Jill Ravitch, Superintendent of Schools Steve Herrington and county mental director Mike Kennedy.
Vice President Joe Biden and his White House gun control task force met this week with gun control and gun rights groups including a Thursday meeting with the NRA.
