Congressman Mike Thompson is asking the U.S. Postal Service to seek historic status for the downtown Ukiah post office.

Placing the 1930s Moderne style building on the National Register of Historic Places would allow the community to apply for preservation grants, tax credits and other benefits to help preserve the post office should it be shuttered as the Postal Service proposes.

The building includes a historic mural painted in 1937 by Benjamin Cunningham. Local officials oppose closure of the post office, which is a hub of downtown activity. They fear it will harm downtown businesses and create blight.

A public hearing on the proposed closure is set for April 21.
