Eureka ReporterU.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) met with American Cancer Society advocates from the 1st Congressional District, including Peggy Buchanan, Janyce Lewis and Ted Lewis from Eureka, to discuss how the U.S. Congress can better support the fight against cancer. Buchanan and the Lewises went to Washington with nearly 10,000 advocates from across the nation as a part of the American Cancer Society's “Celebration on the Hill ‘06.” During their meeting, Thompson re-pledged his commitment to policies that promote prevention, early detection and treatment of cancer and the continuation of cancer research. “Investing in prevention and early detection is the best chance we have at beating cancer,” said Thompson. “While efforts over the past decade to combat cancer have resulted in a decline in the death rate, 1,500 people still die each day from the disease.” Thompson said he will continue to support legislation that makes cancer prevention, detection and research one of our nation's top health priorities.
