Times-Herald-Mike Thompson officially names Philmore Graham Post Office Building
Vallejo's Springstowne Post Office will officially be renamed for the late Philmore Graham on March 14, U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson announced.
The event is free and open to the public. Lunch will be provided.
Thompson is holding the 12:30 p.m. ceremony with United States Postal Service Employees, local leaders, Graham family members, and other community members to celebrate the renaming of the Springstowne Post Office at 100 Admiral Callaghan Lane, to the Philmore Graham Post Office Building, he said. Thompson's legislation to rename the post office was signed into law by President Obama in December.
"Graham served in the Air Force and worked at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard. He was the first, and to this day remains the only, African American to hold the position of supervisor at Mare Island's Department of Nuclear Energy," Thompson said. "He founded the Continentals of Omega Boys and Girls Club in Vallejo, and since its inception the club has worked with thousands of young people."
Graham was named the NAACP's Outstanding Citizen of the Year. He was awarded the Good Neighbor Award, the Salute to America Lifetime Merit Award, the Profile of Excellence Award, the Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, and the "Who's Who" Among Black Americans Award. Additionally, he was named the Omega Man of the Year and Citizen of the Year multiple times.
