Thompson Introduces Resolution Recognizing Women's History Month
Acknowledges roots of national movement in Sonoma County
Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced he has introduced his bipartisan National Women's History Month Resolution. Thompson's legislation honors women's history and the work of so many to uncover forgotten women's heritage. Each year Thompson introduces this bill to mark Women's History Month and his district's important contributions to the national effort.
"For far too long, the work of women in shaping the course of our nation was overlooked, ignored and forgotten. But in the 1970s, members of the Education Taskforce of Sonoma County Commission on the Status of Women worked to counter that, starting a "Women's History Week" that eventually grew into a national movement," said Thompson. "My resolution honors the legacy of our district in the fight to include women's history and strives to continue their fight to spread the news about the great work of women in our communities today. Each year, I am honored to introduce this resolution, mark our district's important role in this effort, and continue our efforts to honor women and their endless contributions to our nation.
This year's Women's History Month specifically honors women who have led their fields in work to end conflict and injustice and the use of nonviolence to impact their communities for the better. This theme is reflected in Thompson's resolution. The legislation has 108 cosponsors, including 5 Republicans, a record level of support.
Congressman Mike Thompson is proud to represent California's 5th Congressional District, which includes all or part of Contra Costa, Lake, Napa, Solano and Sonoma Counties. He is a senior member of the House Committee on Ways and Means where he chairs the Subcommittee on Tax Policy. Rep. Thompson is Chairman of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force. He is also Co-Chair of the bipartisan, bicameral Congressional Wine Caucus and a member of the fiscally-conservative Blue Dog Coalition.
