Thompson Releases Statement on 3 Year Anniversary of the January 6 Insurrection
Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) released the following statement marking the third anniversary of the January 6 insurrection.
“Three years ago today, a violent mob attempted to disrupt the certification of the 2020 election at the direction of the former president. They sought to overturn the will of people, leading to an assault on police, the Capitol, and our democracy itself. Brave Capitol Police and Metropolitan Police officers fought to protect our Capitol, and they deserve recognition as defenders of democracy. The events of that day could have been much worse had it not been for the courageous actions of those officers.
“We are months away from the next presidential election, and the events of January 6 are a reminder that our democracy is fragile. There are bad actors who continue to seek to undermine our democratic institutions and sow division amongst our country. There are those who whitewash the events of that day, but history will remember January 6 for what it was: a violent attempt to overturn the election and keep the former president in power. We must work to ensure that our democracy and our Constitution continue to guide our nation forward.
“January 6 must never be allowed to happen again, and I am committed to doing all I can to ensure that the peaceful transfer of power remains a cornerstone of our democracy.”
