Thompson Releases Statement on State of the Union
Today, Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-04) released the following statement after President Joe Biden delivered the State of the Union address to Congress. Rep. Thompson watched the speech from an undisclosed location having been selected as a designated survivor.
“Over the past two years, President Biden and Democrats in Congress have made it a priority to build our economy from the bottom up and middle out rather than the top down. Our track record confirms these efforts,” said Thompson. “Historic investments in infrastructure, clean energy, and American manufacturing are creating record-breaking job numbers, lowering costs, and strengthening our country. With over 12 million jobs added in two years along with the lowest unemployment rate in over 50 years, the state of our economy is strong. Any efforts to cut Social Security and Medicare would harm millions of Americans and take away from this economic growth.
“I am glad that President Biden dedicated part of his address to the need to address rampant gun violence in our country. As Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, I am working to reduce gun violence and help keep our communities safe. We delivered a strong step in the right direction last year with the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, but we know that this is just the beginning of the work we have to do. The job is not done, and I will work with President Biden and my colleagues to find a path forward to help save lives.
“The American story is one of progress and resilience, and as President Biden said, it is a strong democracy that makes this possible. By working together, we can deliver on the issues that matter to the American people and build on the progress of the last two years.”
