April 7, 2020

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) and Rep. Jared Huffman (CA-02) wrote to Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper asking him to remove Acting Secretary Thomas Modly, citing Modly's unacceptable attack on Captain Crozier in remarks to Crozier's former crew. In that address, he called Crozier stupid and naïve for alerting Navy leadership to the dangers of the spread of Coronavirus among his crew. A copy of the letter is below.

April 6, 2020

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) defended the actions of Captain Brett E. Crozier, a Santa Rosa native and a U.S. Navy captain who was removed from his command after alerting Navy officials as to the dangers of spreading Coronavirus on his aircraft carrier. In remarks leaked in news reports today, the Acting Secretary of the Navy referred to Crozier as "stupid" and "naive" to his former sailors. Thompson released the below statement.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) applauded the decision to temporarily close public facilities, including campgrounds and boat launches, at Lake Berryessa to help flatten the curve and help stop the spread of Coronavirus. Thompson had previously written to the Bureau of Reclamation (BOR) asking them to take this step to help keep visitors and residents safe.

St. Helena – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) and 32 bipartisan Members of the California delegation in writing to California Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara asking him to use his authority to ensure insurance companies comply with their business interruption policies. After hearing that some businesses that had purchased this insurance were getting denied, Thompson and the other signers wrote the below letter to help the businesses get these claims filled so they can remain solvent throughout closures due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

This declaration unlocks emergency protective measures, such as medical equipment, to help the state combat the spread of the pandemic and support people who have already been hit financially. Thompson previously wrote to the President asking him to make this declaration, citing the disproportionate impact of the health crisis on his state.
