Since Americans should respect and honor the nation's veterans and active-duty military every day, every day should be Veterans Day. That was the message delivered by several speakers at this city's Community Center Gym on Tuesday.
"We should thank our veterans and service members for our safety and keep in our thoughts and prayers those who are in harm's way," Mayor Leon Garcia said, noting the city's long-standing tradition of honoring its military members. "And we should ensure they have access to the services they need and earned when they return."
As the camouflaged military vehicle drove slowly by in the Petaluma Veterans Day parade Tuesday, Meggie Haley ran out to hand deliver a very special message to a veteran on board:
"Thank you very much for making me and everybody else safer," her handmade note read.
Eleven-year-old Meggie and her 9-year-old brother, Drew, said they just felt like they wanted to do something special to thank servicemen and women on their special day.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5) today announced that he is encouraging local schools and veterans to participate in the Veterans History Project. The Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center was created by the U.S. Congress in 2000 to collect, preserve and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.

Thompson easily won re-election to the 5th District on Tuesday. Although his victory was never seriously in doubt, he continued to campaign throughout the valley. One of his last stops was with American Canyon's Chamber of Commerce.
ST. HELENA — Clinic Ole is expanding its facilities up and down the Napa Valley.
On Thursday, the clinic unveiled its new St. Helena home to serve the Upvalley. It will offer expanded services and hours as well as new equipment.
Earlier, Clinic Ole announced that it would build a new facility costing $22 million to $24 million in south Napa to serve a rapidly expanding client base looking for affordable medical services in the south county.
WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5), and Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) today announced that the Obama Administration has approved Individual Assistance (IA) Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster funds for areas in Napa and Solano Counties impacted by the August 24th earthquake. The Obama Administration also approved U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) loans for homeowners, businesses, and nonprofit organizations.
In what a federal official Tuesday termed a "close call," potentially millions of dollars in federal disaster assistance is being made available to individuals who were affected by August's earthquake near Napa.
The announcement, made late Monday night, ends weeks of uncertainty over whether people could apply for the direct financial assistance, which covers everything from home repairs to medical expenses.
The decision apparently could have gone either way.
Napa County has received the long-awaited word that millions in federal dollars will be available to homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered losses during the Aug. 24 south Napa earthquake.
Homeowners and renters will be able to apply to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for grants under the Individuals and Households Program. FEMA and the Governor's Office of Emergency Services made the announcement Monday night.

Cal OES and FEMA announced Monday night that the Major Disaster declaration for the recent 6.0 magnitude quake will also include the Individuals and Households Program under the Stafford Act. This amendment makes assistance available to help homeowners and renters recover from the earthquake.
