The line snaked down Escobar Street and hung a left at Pine. It weaved into the Contra Costa County Administration Building, through the lobby and down the hall toward the supervisors' chamber. There, people stood against the walls and sat on the floor, leaving late arrivals to pile into hallways and anterooms.

Rep. Mark DeSaulnier, one of four elected officials who participated in Saturday morning's town hall on protecting the Affordable Care Act, sat at the front of the room in which he once served as a county supervisor.

Dear Friends,

Our community was recently devastated one of the top-three worst fires in California's history. The Valley Fire, which started on September 12, 2015, has burned nearly 80,000 acres. Thousands of people were forced to evacuate. More than a 1,200 homes, 23 multi-family residences and 68 commercial properties were burnt to the ground. At least four people lost their lives. Many families were left with nothing.

Dear Friends,

The Month of March ended on a high note as the House put partisanship aside and passed bipartisan legislation to permanently fix the way doctors are reimbursed for the Medicare services they provide our seniors. While the deal isn't perfect, a permanent fix is far better than continuing to govern from cliff to cliff as we have done with this issue 17 times over 14 years. I am 100 percent committed to ensuring the long-term viability of Medicare and this bill will help make sure Medicare patients continue have access to high-quality, affordable health care.

Dear Friends,

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) has notified my office of IRS phone scams that continue to defraud individuals across the country. According to the OIG, these scammers are demanding money to pay off tax debts, threatening individuals with legal action for taxes due on prior year tax filings, and trying to defraud individuals by saying they are owed a tax refund to lure them into revealing their banking or other private financial information.

Tonight the House and Senate passed a bipartisan agreement to reopen the government and make sure the United States pays its bills on time. The legislation, H.R. 2775 passed the House by a bipartisan vote of 285-144. 198 Democrats and 87 Republicans voted to pass the bill. The Senate passed the legislation by a bipartisan vote of 81-18. I am proud to announce that I co-authored H.R. 15, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act. H.R. 15 is the House version of the bipartisan comprehensive immigration reform bill passed by the Senate.

The Senate has passed tough, fair, bipartisan comprehensive reform legislation that strengthens our borders and offers an earned pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants already living, working and raising families here. It's time for the House to do the same.
