Dear Friend,
As your representative in Washington, I am committed to avoiding a government shutdown. A shutdown would affect millions of Americans, threaten vital services, and jeopardize our nation's fragile economic recovery.
I remain hopeful that a shutdown can still be prevented and will continue to work hard to avoid that unnecessary outcome. However, in the event a shutdown does occur, I wanted to make the following information available to you regarding government services.
These critical services would not be affected:

Dear Friend,
As I'm sure you know, coastal Northern California is under a tsunami warning following a massive earthquake that struck off northeastern Japan. Varying current changes and wave conditions could pose a danger to coastal community residents and beach goers.
The California Emergency Management Agency is continuing to monitor the current tsunami situation. Please visit Calema.ca.gov for up-to-the-minute updates and resources, as well as tips on what you can do to keep yourself safe.

Dear Friend,
Today, I voted against legislation to repeal the important health reform legislation signed into law just last year. Repealing this legislation would roll back important improvements for people throughout our district.
Repealing the health reform law would:
- Remove new protections for 57 million Americans with pre-existing conditions, including at least 8,000 children in our district.
- End the choice for 2.4 million young adults to remain on their parent's plans until they are 26. In our district, 4,200 young people would lose coverage.

Dear Friends,
Tomorrow we will honor and celebrate the tremendous sacrifices our veterans made for our great country. I hope you will join me by taking some time tomorrow to think about the veterans in your community and thank them for their service.

Dear Friend:
Today, I testified before the House Judiciary Committee about the harmful effects H.R. 5034, the "Comprehensive Alcohol Regulatory Effectiveness (CARE) Act of 2010,” would have on the wine industry. Below are my remarks as prepared for delivery:
Good afternoon Chairman Conyers, Ranking Member Smith, Members of the Committee and colleagues. I appreciate the opportunity to testify today.

Dear Friends:
As summer starts, and we spend more time outside, we gain an even greater awareness of the wonderful things that the outdoors contribute to our lives. I feel strongly that we need to preserve every appropriate open space that we can, so that our children and grandchildren can enjoy the same vistas, clean air and clean water that we have today. That's what drives me to work for land conservation and open space preservation in Congress.

Dear Friend:
You may have heard about a bill in Congress that would significantly harm the California wine community, especially small wineries. This bill - H.R. 5034 - was proposed by the National Beer Wholesalers of America as an attempt to increase their control over which products are sold by beer, wine and spirits wholesalers. It's completely wrong-headed, which is why I'm working extremely hard to make sure it goes nowhere.
