Yesterday I joined my colleague from Texas, Gene Green in introducing H.R. 2791, the Responsible Electronics Recycling Act (RERA) of 2013. This bipartisan legislation promotes the U.S. recycling industry by prohibiting the exportation of some electronics whose improper disposal may create environmental, health, or national security risks.
Today I joined my Republican colleague from Pennsylvania, Jim Gerlach, in announcing that we will introduce the bipartisan Conservation Easement Incentive Act of 2013. The legislation provides a permanent tax incentive to family farmers, ranchers, and other landowners who chose not develop their land and instead preserve their property for conservation.
I am pleased to announce that today I founded the bipartisan Congressional Invasive Species Caucus with my Republican colleague from Michigan, Rep. Dan Benishek. The Caucus will serve to raise awareness about invasive species issues, support local communities who are bearing the brunt of this problem, and promote efforts to prevent and control the spread of invasive species. The Caucus will provide opportunities for Members of Congress to meet with other policy makers, organizations and industry leaders that are working to prevent the spread of invasive species.

With student loan rates set to double on Monday, July 1st, I called on the House yesterday to immediately bring up legislation I co-authored, H.R. 1595, the Student Loan Relief Act. This bill would allow college students to benefit from historically low interest rates by freezing the current 3.4 percent rate on subsidized Stafford loans for the next two years. Unfortunately, the House Majority wouldn't allow my bill to come to up for consideration.

Today, November 11th, is Veterans Day - a time when we as a nation pause to honor and recognize the enormous sacrifices of our nation's veterans and their families.
There are more than 1.4 million Armed Forces personnel currently serving our nation on Active Duty around the world. There are 3.1 million family members of Active Duty and Reserve Members.
These brave Americans are serving our country selflessly - without any expectation of recognition, gratitude, or praise. They do it out of duty, out of honor. They do it for us.

Please join us and hear from and meet with representatives from local VA Medical Centers, the VA Oakland Regional Office, and other federal agencies that offer services and benefits to veterans!
Guests will also be invited to participate in breakout sessions led by local experts covering issues affecting Women Veterans; Jobs and Employment; PTSD; Veterans Housing; and Veterans Education Benefits.
