U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena) released a statement Friday, encouraging residents of his district to support California's flower growers this Mother's Day.

More than 75 percent of domestically grown flowers are grown in California, accounting for 20 percent of all flowers sold in the United States and directly supporting more than 10,000 California jobs, according to the statement.

The winner of the competition will represent California's 1st Congressional District in the U.S. Capitol, where his or her artwork will be displayed for one year.
