Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health, announced that the full committee has advanced his legislation to ensure health care coverage for wounded veterans, the Health Equity and Access for Returning Troops and Servicemembers (HEARTS) Act. This bill corrects a flaw in our Medicare and TRICARE systems that imposes an undue financial penalty on wounded veterans who return to work.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) voted to pass H.R. 3055, an appropriations bill that includes key priorities for California's Fifth Congressional District. Most notably, this legislation includes $2.25 billion in funding for fire suppression operations, a $25 million increase in funding for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), and a prohibition on funds being used to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census. Thompson released the following statement after final passage of that bill.

I'd like to welcome everyone to today's hearing on how the recently-enacted cap on the State and Local Tax Deduction is affecting communities, schools, first responders, and housing values.

The cap on the SALT deduction was one of the most divisive and controversial provisions arising from the deeply flawed and sloppy Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Washington – Today Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that his bill, the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019, has been favorably reported out of the full Committee on Ways and Means and is ready for consideration by the whole House. A statement from Chairman Thompson is below. This is the first time in more than a decade that the Committee has extended these provisions prospectively.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA), along with Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) announced the introduction of the Refuge System Protection Act. This bipartisan and bicameral bill gives the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) the authority to collect civil damages to repair damaged property and resources on wildlife refuges.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA), Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures, and Rep. Ron Estes (R-KS), along with Senators Chris Coons (D-DE) and Jerry Moran (R-KS) announced the introduction of the Financing Our Future Energy Act. This bipartisan and bicameral bill gives renewable energy projects access to master limited partnerships (MLP), a tax advantage currently only available to oil, gas, and coal projects.

Washington—Senator Dianne Feinstein and Representative Mike Thompson (both D-Calif.) and 17 of their congressional colleagues today called on the Trump administration to ensure any new trade agreements with China or Japan remove tariffs on U.S. wine.

Tariffs on U.S. wine sold in China rose to 54 percent this month, up from 14 percent in March 2018. In Japan, the tariff on U.S. wine is 15 percent. In both countries, foreign competitors face either no or significantly lower tariffs, making it harder for U.S wineries to compete.
