Each year, more than 3 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur in the United States. And given the rise in competition and competitiveness in sports at all levels, concussions and head injuries are happening with greater frequency.

Yet, it's a health issue that the public â€" and parents in particular â€" is only beginning to get its head around. In many cases, players, parents and coaches downplay the significance of head injuries in hopes that “toughing it out” will be in the best interests of the player and their team and that there will be no long-term impacts.

President Obama finished his State of the Union speech with a rousing call for action against gun violence. He invoked the name of 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton, shot to death just a week after performing at the inauguration. The president brought up the wounding of ex-Rep. Gabby Giffords and the families of mass slaughters in Connecticut, Colorado, Wisconsin, Arizona and Virginia.

"They deserve a vote," he implored.

Imagine if it were the Transportation Security Administration's policy to let four out of 10 people bypass security at the airport. And imagine if TSA let passengers choose whether they'd go through security. Federal law prohibits this because if it didn't, criminals, terrorists and others who are intent to do harm would easily slip through the cracks and board any plane they wanted.

Congressman comments on Obama's State of the Union message.

U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, said he backed President's Obama's priorities in Tuesday night's State of the Union address -- particularly the President's focus on Democrats and Republicans working together to put the needs of the country first, before partisan politics.

“The state of our union is getting stronger, but we have more work to do," Thompson said, echoing Obama's words.

House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chair Rep. Mike Thompson on Tuesday released documents from constitutional experts and groups seeking to prevent gun violence that highlight that laws aimed at reducing gun violence and respect for the Second Amendment are not mutually exclusive.

The documents were released in advance of Tuesday's Senate Judiciary Subcommittee hearing on the constitutionality of gun violence prevention legislation.
