Sen. Dianne Feinstein ignited a firestorm among fellow California Democrats on Thursday as word spread of her proposal to divert Northern California water to Central Valley farmers.

Feinstein wants to attach the proposal as an amendment to a fast-tracked Senate jobs bill. She is pitching the plan as a jobs measure to address the economic calamity in the Central Valley. It would increase farm water allocations from 10 percent last year to 40 percent this year and next, an amount that farmers say is the bare minimum they need.

Windsor's congressman, Mike Thompson, stopped by the Windsor Library on Feb. 8 for a public meeting to discuss issues of importance to local constituents.

During the hour long meeting, Thompson gave a brief speech and took questions from the audience covering a mix of local and national issues.

During his speech, Thompson praised the current congress as a group that had tackled hard issues and worked harder than people realized.

The new Frank R. Howard Memorial Hospital received an earmark for $350,000 in the 2010 Omnibus Appropriations Bill passed by Congress in December. The earmark for Willits hospital was included in the $446.8 billion bill.

Congressman Mike Thompson was the sponsor for the Willits hospital funding and for $350,000 set aside for St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka.

This is the second year money has been earmarked for the new hospital with $190,000 included in the 2009 fiscal year's budget.

UC Davis has received a federal grant of $2.5 million through the Department of Energy for its on-going West Village Project, a mixed housing and commercial development now under construction.

The funding was made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which was supported by area Congressional representatives Doris Matsui and Mike Thompson.

Lake One Stop, Inc. celebrated the grand opening of its new Clearlake location Wednesday. Many joined in the celebration including business and community partners, area government officials, and representatives of Congressman Mike Thompson and Assemblyman Wes Chesbro.

Lake One Stop is an employment resource and service agency with programs benefiting both the employer and the employee. Programs aim to identify and develop skills compatible with area workforce needs and desires.

President Barack Obama's State of the Union speech won unanimously high marks for eloquence from North Coast politicians and analysts, but there were some distinct partisan and philosophical divides.

Rep. Lynn Woolsey, a Petaluma Democrat with strong liberal views, applauded her party leader's "commitment to Main Street America" and his calls for clean energy, jobs and health care legislation.

"He made a commitment to go forward," Woolsey said. "He gave us our marching orders" on health care.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Humboldt County on Tuesday, three days after the North Coast was rocked by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that caused millions of dollars in damage and hours after the Board of Supervisors made a formal appeal for aid.

The governor said he proclaimed the state of emergency because damage from Saturday's temblor is expected to reach $28 million as well as the disruption to utility lines and the continuing aftershocks.
