REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP: 'NO GO ON PAYGO'

Thompson Amendment Denied Consideration by Majority
Representative Mike Thompson (D- Napa Valley) issued the following statement today in response to passage of the House Budget Resolution. House Republican leaders prevented Rep. Thompson from offering his straightforward PAYGO amendment to today's budget resolution. “The House Republican budget proves to America that Congress holds families to a higher standard than it holds itself.” “Americans go to work every day so that they can pay down their debts. But when Congress goes to work, the debt just grows.” “I offered a PAYGO amendment to the budget resolution that would have required the House to pay for the bills we pass.” “My amendment was rejected on party lines in the Budget Committee. It was rejected on party lines in the Rules Committee. And, it was rejected today by every person who voted for the Republican budget.” “The Constitution grants Congress the power of the purse. The purse is empty. The Senate recognized this and put PAYGO in their budget. House Republicans did not, and put partisan politics ahead of sound policy at the expense of all Americans, young and old.” ###
