Thompson Continues Call For Pay/Go
May 5, 2004
The author of the original House motion to accept Pay/Go provisions spoke out on the House floor today in strong support of a new motion that would apply Pay/Go rules to all spending and revenue measures. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Calif.), a member of the House Budget Committee, said, “Ten years ago our colleagues across the aisle made a contact with America. One of the first principals they promised to instill in this Congress was a requirement that all laws that apply to the rest of the country also apply equally to the Congress. Shouldn't the fiscal laws that apply to the American family also apply to this Congress?” An identical motion offered by Thompson was narrowly defeated in late March after the Republican leadership held the vote open long enough to switch the votes needed to seal its defeat. As a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, Thompson has worked to ensure fiscal responsibility in government throughout his tenure in elected office. Thompson served as the Chairman of the California State Senate Budget Committee where he balanced the state budget five times. ###
