Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that his bipartisan bill, The Portable Fuel Container Safety Act, has cleared the House Committee on Energy and Commerce with unanimous approval and now heads to the floor for consideration by the full House. This bill, prompted by the experience of one of Thompson's constituents, will help prevent fire accidents by establishing a standard for Flame Mitigation Devices.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), Co-Chair of the Natural Disaster Caucus, announced that his amendment to boost natural disaster response passed as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This amendment, offered with fellow Natural Disaster Caucus Co-Chair Rep. Garret Graves (LA-06), provides authorization for Federal support of multistate National Guard deployments to natural disasters.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that his bipartisan bill, the Portable Fuel Container Safety Act, was passed unanimously by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Consumer Protection and Commerce Subcommittee at today's markup. This bill directs the Consumer Product Safety Commission to establish a standard requiring Flame Mitigation Devices to be used to prevent fire accidents.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health, announced that the full committee has advanced his legislation to ensure health care coverage for wounded veterans, the Health Equity and Access for Returning Troops and Servicemembers (HEARTS) Act. This bill corrects a flaw in our Medicare and TRICARE systems that imposes an undue financial penalty on wounded veterans who return to work.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) voted to pass H.R. 3055, an appropriations bill that includes key priorities for California's Fifth Congressional District. Most notably, this legislation includes $2.25 billion in funding for fire suppression operations, a $25 million increase in funding for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), and a prohibition on funds being used to include a citizenship question in the 2020 census. Thompson released the following statement after final passage of that bill.

I'd like to welcome everyone to today's hearing on how the recently-enacted cap on the State and Local Tax Deduction is affecting communities, schools, first responders, and housing values.

The cap on the SALT deduction was one of the most divisive and controversial provisions arising from the deeply flawed and sloppy Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

Washington – Today Chairman of the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Select Revenue Measures Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that his bill, the Taxpayer Certainty and Disaster Tax Relief Act of 2019, has been favorably reported out of the full Committee on Ways and Means and is ready for consideration by the whole House. A statement from Chairman Thompson is below. This is the first time in more than a decade that the Committee has extended these provisions prospectively.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA) and Rep. Rob Wittman (R-VA), along with Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) and Sen. Cory Gardner (R-CO) announced the introduction of the Refuge System Protection Act. This bipartisan and bicameral bill gives the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) the authority to collect civil damages to repair damaged property and resources on wildlife refuges.
