Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) lauded the President's decision to declare a major disaster in California due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This declaration unlocks emergency protective measures, such as medical equipment, to help the state combat the spread of the pandemic and support people who have already been hit financially. Thompson previously wrote to the President asking him to make this declaration, citing the disproportionate impact of the health crisis on his state.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), a senior member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, voted to pass H.R. 6201, the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. This bill addresses the health and financial effects of the spreading Coronavirus on families in America. A statement from Thompson is below. Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05), Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-06), Rep. John Garamendi (CA-03), and Rep. Jared Huffman (CA-02) announced they have introduced legislation to require cruise lines to reimburse passengers whose trips have been cancelled due to the Coronavirus. This would apply for tickets purchased on or before February 1, 2020 and to cancellations both from the cruise line itself and by the passenger because of concerns over the ongoing public health emergency.

Washington – Today Gun Violence Prevention Task Force Chairman Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that a record 196 Members of Congress have signed his letter to Appropriators requesting $100 million to fund the National Instant Background Checks System (NICS). Funding will allow states to update their databases and improve communication between states and the NICS system. A copy of the letter is below and a signed version is attached.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) and Rep. Anna Eshoo (CA-18) announced that Thompson's bipartisan PHONE Act has been referred by the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology to the full committee for consideration, the final step before a vote on the House floor. H.R. 1289, the PHONE Act, would allow residents who lost their homes to natural disasters, such as wildfires, to keep their phone numbers at no cost to them while they rebuild.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) voted to pass the bipartisan Coronavirus Preparedness and Response Supplemental Appropriations Act. The package included Thompson's legislation to waive existing telehealth restrictions during the Coronavirus public health emergency. This bipartisan provision would suspend some Medicare telehealth restrictions to allow seniors to get medical care via telehealth. Many Medicare beneficiaries would also be able to get health care in their own homes via telehealth.

Washington – Today Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that he is now accepting submissions for his 2020 Fifth Congressional District Art Competition, which is open to all local high school students. Each year, this competition gives young artists the chance to have their talent recognized. The winning piece of art from the district will be displayed in the United States Capitol.
