U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, has reignited a push to reform gun laws in America following high-profile incidents of gun violence in Santa Barbara and cities in Washington, Oregon and Nevada recently.

Thompson chaired a task force on preventing gun violence in the House of Representatives in early 2013, following a mass shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012 that left 26 children and adults at the school dead.

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Reps. Mike Thompson (CA-5) and Jared Huffman (CA-2) today passed an amendment in the U.S. House of Representatives that would provide the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Office of Inspector General (OIG) with $1 million in additional resources to protect our nation's food supply and help the OIG conduct more efficient investigations into food recalls, like the recall at Rancho Feeding in Sonoma County. The amendment, which is fully paid for, was offered to H.R.

Mike Thompson (CA-5) announced today that his office is accepting applications from those ages 17-23 who are interested in attending the four service academies requiring nominations: United States Air Force Academy, United States Merchant Marine Academy, United States Military Academy at West Point, and the United States Naval Academy. The fifth service academy, the Coast Guard Academy, does not require a nomination.

Studies since the Benghazi attack in 2012 have identified the need for security personnel at U.S. diplomatic posts to receive threat information from the Intelligence Community in a timely manner so that they can request and receive security enhancements as needed.
