In just barely over two weeks, we've been jolted – or have we, really? – by shootings on or near college and high school campuses in California, Washington and now Oregon.

Six dead in Isla Vista. One dead in Seattle. And now Troutdale, where a student was killed, the gunman died, and the lives of hundreds of teenagers, parents and staff at Reynolds High School were turned upside down this morning.

WASHINGTON D.C. – Legislation authored by U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5) to improve the security at American embassies passed the U.S. House of Representatives as part of H.R. 4681, the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Years 2014 and 2015. Studies since the Benghazi attack in 2012 have identified the need for security personnel at U.S. diplomatic posts to receive threat information from the Intelligence Community in a timely manner so that they can request and receive security enhancements as needed.

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5) today announced a $1,009,000 Small Business Administration (SBA) business loan for VJB Vineyard & Cellars. The SBA loan was used as part of the project financing of the VJB Vineyard & Cellars' facilities, including final improvements that were completed in time for the summer tourist season.

WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-5) today announced a $3,087,565 Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) grant for Santa Rosa Community Health Centers (SRCHC). The grant will help SRCHC provide effective, responsive, culturally-appropriate solutions to community health needs for the populations served by SRCHC.

Congress has partnered with four of our five service academies (Air Force, Army, Navy and Merchant Marine) for more than 150 years to nominate candidates for admission.

The fifth service academy, the Coast Guard Academy, does not require a nomination.

Two Vallejo students were among seven appointed by Rep. Mike Thompson to the nation's service academies, Thompson's office announced. Both were appointed to the Naval Academy.

Congress has partnered with the Air Force, Army, Navy and Merchant Marine academies for more than 150 years to nominate candidates for admission. The fifth service institution, the Coast Guard Academy, does not require a nomination.

Thompson announced his appointments from California's Fifth Congressional District on Monday.
