NORTHERN CALIFORNIA – U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena) announced Monday that $2 million in emergency relief funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation's (DOT) Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is being allocated to help the California Department of Transportation and local agencies cover repair costs for infrastructure damaged by the Aug. 24 earthquake.

Forty-nine people there were injured, and two remained hospitalized.

Rep. Mike Thompson announced Monday that $2 million in federal transportation funds will be directed to Caltrans and local agencies to use in rebuilding quake-damaged roads, bridges and other transportation infrastructure in the Napa Valley.

Thompson, D-St. Helena, said the money, provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration, would help offset repair costs, now estimated by Caltrans to top $10 million.

Another 1.1 million boys — and some girls — at more than 15,000 high schools will be starting their football seasons as well. Alhambra High School junior Victor Romiti knows firsthand the devastating effects of a concussion.

The two-sport athlete suffered a severe one in December during wrestling practice, and it wasn't until February that doctors finally cleared him of symptoms, which included headaches, constant drowsiness and inability to concentrate.

"It was so difficult for him because he loves sports so much," said his grandmother, Barbara Romiti.

Congressman Mike Thompson of California's Fifth Congressional District hosted an open forum on Monday evening to have an open discussion about the safety of high school athletes who have suffered from head injuries.

Thompson and his team hosted parents at Alhambra High School and provided a panel of experts that were there to give their expertise to parents concerned with the handling of head injuries on the field.
