Immigrants are an integral part of our nation's history, culture, and economy. They strengthen America and contribute greatly to our success. However, the current immigration system is broken and needs to be fixed.
My grandmother worked her entire adult life to provide for her family. She owned and operated a small business with my grandfather, sewed gloves at the Napa glove factory and labeled wine bottles at Inglenook Winery. When she retired, she had only a small pension of $53 per month.
The United States was founded on the principle of liberty and justice for all. But we have not always lived up to this promise – which is why we must persevere in making this a reality for all Americans.
Lack of affordable housing is devastating California families. Even with help, too many people in our district face housing insecurity. Sadly, the 2017 fires have only exacerbated this crisis. Through Low-income Housing Tax Credits, I was able to secure funding that created more than 1,500 units of affordable housing in our district.
We need to restore order at the border. This is a real issue and it needs to be fixed. I am supportive of policies that would work to reduce the chaos at the border and would move us towards a more fair immigration system.
