Here are a few ways you can cut down on energy costs and help reduce our dependency on foreign oil. - Tune-up your car's engine and keep your tires properly inflated. Getting a regular tune-up, including servicing your engine, using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil and replacing air filters regularly, can improve your car's mileage by up to 16%. Keeping your car's tire properly inflated can improve your mileage by up to 3%.

Eureka: Times-StandardAfter years of working to craft a bill that will preserve some of the best wild places remaining in Northern California, it appears that legislation is set to be signed by the president. Much to the credit of Rep. Mike Thompson and California Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, the bill represents a set of compromises necessary to get those spectacular places protected. The St. Helena Democrat managed to get the bill through a Republican House, and the senators got it through a Republican Senate.

Santa Rosa: Press DemocratFive years of hard work and persistence finally paid off for Rep. Mike Thompson this week. The House on Monday approved a compromise plan to designate 273,000 acres of California lands as wilderness area, much of it on the North Coast. The centerpiece of this deal is preservation of 42,585 acres of the majestic King Range National Conservation Area south of Eureka.
