A resolution overwhelmingly approved by House Republicans will weaken federal gun control laws aimed at preventing mentally ill people from purchasing firearms, Rep. Mike Thompson said Friday.
The House action would permanently revoke an Obama administration rule requiring the Social Security Administration to report the names of people with severe mental illness to the federal gun-buying background checks system.
Rep. Mike Thompson visited Napa Valley Care Center on Friday morning to answer questions from seniors and medical professionals about the future of healthcare coverage under the Trump Administration.
The first question came quietly from 70-year-old Gwyn Bissell.
"She hasn't heard any specifics to what the replacement for the Affordable Care Act would be," Thompson said. "There's a reason why she hasn't. There's no replacement."
Rep. Mike Thompson and Santa Rosa-based national nonprofit Canine Companions for Independence held a press conference Tuesday to highlight the recent launch of a pilot program through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs that offers service dog benefits to veterans with mental health diagnoses.
Thumbs up for a program that will place service dogs with veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental illnesses. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has covered veterinary bills for dogs assisting veterans who are blind or deaf since 2002. An effort to extend the benefit to veterans suffering from PTSD and other mental illnesses started almost a decade ago, but studies to gauge the therapeutic value of service dogs have been plagued by delays.
Restoring salmon in the Russian River and protecting the North Coast from oil rigs — two long-standing campaigns with broad public support — are among the goals likely to be challenged if not stifled by the sharp right turn of Donald Trump’s administration, environmental advocates and Democratic lawmakers said.

Rep. Mike Thompson awarded fellow Vietnam veteran Jeffrey Spratt of Yountville with the Bronze Star he had earned for his honorable service during the Vietnam War but had never received.
Although Spratt was awarded the Bronze Star, it was never recorded on his DD-214, the form used to verify military service, and was therefore not official. In addition, Spratt was awarded additional medals that were not recorded on his DD-214 and were never received.
Rep. Mike Thompson announced that his office has recouped more than $1.6 million owed to residents of the Fifth Congressional District by federal agencies in 2016, including more than $300,000 for Napa County residents.
With the help of U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (D-Napa), Contra Costa County residents this year have recovered more than $13,000 owed them by various federal agencies.
“I’m proud to announce that my office has been able to help residents of our Congressional district recoup over $1.6 million owed to them by federal agencies like the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs among others,” Thompson said.
U.S. Rep. Mike Thompson (CA-05) announced that his office has recouped over $1.6 million owed to residents of the Fifth Congressional District by federal agencies in 2016, including over $23,700 for Lake County residents alone.
