Emotions ran deep and opinions wide Wednesday night at a packed gun violence prevention forum at Vallejo City Hall. Many speakers supported gun ownership while others called for greater measures to prevent senseless shootings.

Sponsored by Rep. Mike Thompson, D-St. Helena, the forum came in the wake of last month's school shooting tragedy in Connecticut. The meeting drew social service experts, school
officials, Vallejo's police chief and state Department of Justice representatives.

Madeleine Melo of Fort Bragg, widow of the North Coast's most prominent recent victim of gun violence, spoke out Thursday night in defense of gun ownership at a public forum convened by Rep. Mike Thompson.

"I strongly support our right to own and use guns," Melo told Thompson and six other public officials before an overflow crowd in the Sonoma County supervisors chambers in Santa Rosa.

Vice-President Joe Biden said he and the President are “determined to take action” in the wake of the Newtown shootings. Wednesday he's meeting with gun control advocates and victims' families. Thursday he'll meet with sportsmen's group and a representative from the NRA.

At the same time, Congressman Mike Thompson, D-Calif., leads a Congressional task force on gun violence, formed after the Newtown tragedy.

Thompson was once named by Guns & Ammo one of eight “surprisingly pro-gun Democrats”.

A new financial boost will help The Pathway Home better assist war veterans after they leave its doors, according to officials of the Yountville therapy center.

Pathway on Tuesday announced a two-year, $200,000 grant it received from the Newman's Own Foundation, the charity founded by and named for the late actor Paul Newman.
