The Cotati City Council is now part of the controversial and fiery debate on gun control in the United States.
In the wake of the shooting tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., the council at its meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 23, was expected to pass an item on its consent calendar which would send a letter to support the efforts of U.S. Representative Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena, 5th District), the Democratic chair of Gun Violence Prevention Task Force.

A lifetime National Rifle Association member said Wednesday during a Capitol Hill hearing on gun violence that he doesn't think putting an armed guard in every school â€" an idea being pushed by NRA leadership â€" is productive.

North Bay Congressman Mike Thompson met Monday with Vice President Joe Biden, Attorney General Eric Holder, Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius to discuss a comprehensive approach to reduce and prevent gun violence.

The Jan. 9 article “Gun control debate stirs Napa crowd,” covered well the gun violence prevention public forum held in Napa by our Rep. Mike Thompson to bring together law enforcement members, elected officials, mental health experts, school officials and the public to have a comprehensive discussion on how we can reduce and prevent gun violence in our community while protecting the Second Amendment rights of individuals.

Legislation to require background checks for gun purchases and to limit high-capacity ammunition magazines have the best chance of gaining bipartisan support to pass the U.S. House and Senate, said California Representative Mike Thompson.
