After conducting their own independent review of gun violence, House Democrats on Thursday outlined new gun-control proposals very similar to the White House plan: Broader background checks and bans on military-style semiautomatic weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

The measures -- including an assault-style weapons ban -- are the initial house democratic response to the deadly Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in December.

The package has 15 proposals and resembles President Obama's plans to stop gun violence.

Written by a dozen House democrats, the plans were led by California democratic Represenative Mike Thompson.

Feb. 7 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. House Democrats proposed a ban on military-style assault weapons and a 10-round limit on ammunition magazines to try to curb mass shootings.

Democrats today also called for background checks for almost all gun buyers and for requiring states to include more information in the national criminal background database.
