SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) — Building on a sit-in staged by House Democrats in the nation’s capitol last week, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and members of the Bay Area congressional delegation on Wednesday gathered in San Francisco to call for House Republicans to allow a vote on gun control bills.

Fresh from last week’s sit-in on the floor of Congress, seven U.S. representatives brought their call for new gun control laws on Wednesday to the front door of Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, which treats many victims of gun violence.

“No more moments of silence,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, said. “No more silence.”

Watching the Democrats’ sit-in on the House floor last week filled Mandy Pifer with pride — and the conviction that Congress will act on tougher gun violence laws.

Pifer, whose boyfriend, Shannon Johnson, was killed in the San Bernardino shooting Dec. 2, had the chance to offer her encouragement in person Wednesday at a roundtable discussion on advancing gun control hosted by Southern California House members at Los Angeles City Hall.

Martinez, CA – U.S. Reps. Mike Thompson (CA-5) and Mark DeSaulnier (CA-11) visited the Martinez Early Childhood Center on Monday present a check totaling $4.5 million of federal grant money to support Head Start services throughout Contra Costa County. Specifically, the funding will be used to increase the number of children in high quality early learning programs with local partnerships, increase the rate of pay for Family Child Care Providers, and increase teacher qualifications, educational standards, and family and community engagement.

Washington, D.C.—Today, a bipartisan group of Members in the House, representing vastly different regions of our country, came together to introduce legislation that will deny the sale of firearms to those on "No-Fly" lists. H.R. 5576, the House-companion to the bipartisan Terrorist Firearms Prevention Act led by Sen. Collins (R-ME), was introduced by Reps. Seth Moulton (D-MA), Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), Peter King (R-NY), Mike Thompson (D-CA), Bob Dold (R-IL), Robin Kelly (D-IL), Scott Rigell (R-VA), Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI), and John Carney (D-DE).

WASHINGTON - California winemakers have now enlisted lawmakers and federal regulators in their latest effort to stop the dilution of some vintage names.

Squeezed by the state’s large congressional delegation, regulators are proposing to restrict further the use of certain crucial words on wine labels. The move would stop out-of-state wine producers from spuriously identifying their wine as coming from a designated California region.

Three House Republicans and one Democrat announced Friday the introduction of legislation to prevent individuals on certain terrorist watch lists from purchasing a gun but with an appeals process for denials.

The bill, identical to a proposal Maine GOP Sen. Susan Collins offered in the upper chamber , is part of a bipartisan, bicameral attempt to find a legislative compromise on restricting terrorists' access to guns following the mass shooting in Orlando, Florida, this month that left 49 people dead and 53 others injured.

The organizers of the daylong “sit-in” protest, which effectively shut down the House earlier this week, are urging Democrats to participate in a “national day of action” on June 29.
